ANUMA is pleased to announce that we will be having a Public Lecture by Asmi Wood, a Lecturer of Law at the ANU on Thursday 30th of October. The title of Brother Asmi’s lecture is “An aspect of Islamic Worship in Contemporary Australia” and below is a brief synopsis of what his talk will cover:
The talk proposes to examine the broad legal framework that circumscribes religious worship in Australia briefly by examining the Muslim faith as a case study. It does this by first by examining the Shari'a content of Islam (the free acceptance of the Shahada i.e, submission, i.e to become Muslim) and this submission is reflected in practice by the performance of the pillars of Islam. The issue is however, that this 'submission' is merely the starting point.
There is a view that there seems to be few -if any - practical legal impediments to practice at this level. Is this a valid observation? Are Muslim women disadvantaged by contemporary practice? Those the Qu’ran refers to as Muslim (those who have submitted) however is in contradistinction to those the Qur'an refers to as 'mu'min' or the believers. This talk aims briefly to examine the two concepts in our contemporary context by following the framework outlined above.
